The Perfect Housing Setup

The addition of a bunny or bunnies to your life is such an exciting time! They fill the part of your heart that you didn’t even know you were missing. It is so important to make sure that you set up an enriching environment to keep both them, and yourself as happy as possible. This is one of the most important aspects of your bunnies life – this is their home, their safe space.

Unfortunately, most pet stores give out false information, leading people to believe that it’s okay for a bunny to be trapped all day in a 3ft wire box. This is a common mistake that bunny owners make, there are not many shops that promote good set-ups or products for bunnies to enrich their lives. Bunnies need ample space and exercise to keep themselves happy. Below I have included a range of both indoor and outdoor set-ups, with links to products!

Indoor Housing

Historically, bunnies have been associated with tiny hutches at the bottom of gardens. As breeders, we understand the importance of a good-sized space. For an indoor space, we highly recommend a pen set-up! This enables your bunny to maximise their living space. Pens can fit into most spaces in homes, and keep a bunny secure with enough space to be in long term happily when not out playing. This is a much better alternative to shutting a bunny in a 3ft shop brought prison.

Heavy Duty Puppy Pen painted white

Shop brought indoor cages would work well as a ‘base’, with the door removed, for a free-roam bunny. However, it isn’t suitable to shut any bunny in for a long period of time. Another idea would be a hutch attached to a puppy pen, as per the examples in the above photos. Due to naturally being prey animals, it’s important for your bunny to have a space where they can feel safe and relaxed. Here are some styles of pens and indoor hutches/enclosures and where you could potentially purchase them from:

CLICK HERE TO SHOP – LARGE SIZE HEAVY DUTY PUPPY PEN
Here is a link to a 158 x 158 x 120cm, 8 Piece heavy duty pen from Amazon. This pen is fantastic as it is taller than average puppy pens standing at 120cm. The pen gives 26 sqft of area – however, additional panels can be purchased and the pen is modular so can be rearranged to suit the layout of your ‘bunny space’.

CLICK HERE TO SHOP – MEDIUM-SIZED HEAVY-DUTY PUPPY PEN
This is the same as the one above, just a bit smaller if you don’t have the room, 6 Piece heavy-duty modular pen. This pen stands at 100cm high and still offers plenty of room for an indoor bun. The pen gives 13 sqft of area space – however, additional panels can be purchased and the pen is modular so can be rearranged to suit the layout of your ‘bunny space’.

CLICK HERE TO SHOP – CUSTOMISABLE CAGE GRIDS
These square grids are amazing for being creative and making your own set-up design! They are modular; meaning they can be rearranged to suit your space, and you can also purchase additional panels to expand your set-up! I would recommend your set-up to be at least 2, if not 3 panels high, and for extra security, you may find creating a roof to be beneficial if you have any escapee bunnies!

CLICK HERE TO SHOP – C&C CAGE
These are square grids as well but the sides are made up of transparent smooth plastic, so very easy on the eye. Also modular, so you can shape it any way you want, add or take away to suit the needs of your bunny and your space.

CLICK HERE TO SHOP – METAL PLAYPEN
These pens are a good value option if you would like to section off an area in the house. The modular panels can create various shapes for your bunnies home. The grids provide great places to hook on toys and water bottles etc. The downside to these pens are they can be quite flimsy if they are not properly distributed or balanced; however, they can create nice large spaces for your bunny to thrive.

CLICK HERE TO SHOP – FERPLAST RABBIT CAGE
This cage will work well provided it’s for a bunny that is free-roaming or has an attached run to give them enough room to run around. It’s great as it has all the accessories with it and the front door flap opens wide so your bunny and get in and out with ease. It is also easy to clean as everything is contained within its box.

Outhdoor Hutches

Hutches are most commonly used for bunnies. Whilst they remain a popular option, there are many on the market that are not suitable for rabbit use. The minimum recommended by the RWARF is 5x2ft however 6ft+ is preferred. You can never give a bunny too much space. We would also strongly recommend that you attach a run to the hutch so that the bunny/bunnies get to maximise their space. Bunnies LOVE to binky and play! If at all possible keep your hutch indoors like in a shed or in an enclosed aviary for extra security. Otherwise, a protective cover would work well too, especially in the cold winter months.

Probably the most pricier hutches of them all, but definitely the more innovative and attractive looking. They are low maintenance, easy to clean and fox resistant. They come with pull out trays, an attached rabbit run and big enough for 2 bunnies. They are great during the winter and summer months. So if your budget stretches this far, I would definitely opt for this if you can.

WALK IN PET CAGE CLICK TO SHOP
This isn’t a ‘hutch’ as such although it’s perfect for a hutch to be inside as it is open and an extension of space for the bunnies. It is made of galvanised steel and has a rain cover to protect from the weather. This cage should be secured around the edges to prevent foxes from getting in. This is a great way to be able to “walk-in” and enjoy your bunnies in their space.

Bunny Sheds

If you chose to house your bunny/bunnies outdoors and would like a little more space then we suggest investing in a shed, or maybe just repurposing one if you aren’t using yours. These can be very similar sizes to a hutch, yet almost triple the floor space ensuring enough space to jump, binky and flop. There are lots of options on the market to house bunnies in sheds, from DIY plain shed, to fully furnished sheds with a connecting aviary!

These sheds are a blank canvas for creativity. Many sheds to suit any budget. We would suggest creating a second level to maximise space, and adding an entryway to connect a run if possible.

Also check places like Homebase, B&Q, Argos etc.

Exercise Pens/Runs

It is vitally important that your bunny has sufficient time in a run or secure space where they can exercise, play and have mental stimulation. Even better if they can be in the sunlight for a bit too. A run is a good way to allow this to happen in a safe way- of course, the bigger is always better.
